For the last six years the City and the University of Washington have been engaged in a long process of updating the 1978 Master Plan for the Arboretum. The new plan, which is to guide the development of the park for the next 30 years, began with an initial scoping report in 1994 and then was followed up with a draft plan published in 1997.

The Culture, Arts and Parks Committee will hold a public hearing on the Arboretum Master Plan on Wednesday, March 28, at 5:30 p.m. The hearing will take place in the City Council Chambers on the 11th floor of the Municipal Building, at 600 4th Avenue, between Cherry and James. This will be a joint hearing with the Board of Park Commissioners. Sign-in begins at 5 p.m. in the lobby outside the Chambers.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Washington Park Arboretum Master Plan proposed by the Arboretum and Botanical Gardening Committee. This Master Plan is proposed to replace the current 1978 Master Plan, and is intended as a 30-year plan.
