For the last six years the City and the University of Washington have been engaged in a long process of updating the 1978 Master Plan for the Arboretum. The new plan, which is to guide the development of the park for the next 30 years, began with an initial scoping report in 1994 and then was followed up with a draft plan published in 1997.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Washington Park Arboretum Master Plan proposed by the Arboretum and Botanical Gardening Committee. This Master Plan is proposed to replace the current 1978 Master Plan, and is intended as a 30-year plan.

Urban Politics #50: Olympics – Still Dead?

November 10th, 1998

On October 19, eight of nine City Council Members co-signed a letter to the Seattle Bid Committee stating that we could not support a resolution in favor of a bid for the 2012 Olympics. Portions of the letter are reprinted below. . In the end, it was a Council consensus opinion. In fact, because of a lack of support, it didn’t even came up for a vote. No Council Member was willing to sponsor a resolution endorsing the Olympics.
